There was something about seeing another artist’s studio. Penny loved art of all kinds, and she wished that she could do more multimedia. But watercolor was her preferred, with something like pencils or markers. Ceramics was a whole other thing though. Penny didn’t mind it but there was a different thing about ceramics. Which is why she was happy to spend money on it. Maybe she would take a class or something, too.
She walked into Avalon gallery, a maker’s space of sorts. Penny didn’t know the artist in charge – but Instagram brought her here. So far, she was impressed. But that was easy since Penny couldn’t do what was presented. Okay, she could, but terribly.
Her eyes browsed the rows of glazed pots and mugs. They landed on another figure browsing. He looked like someone who had been around here a bit. Plus, he was cute – maybe Penny could get more from the conversation.
Penny carefully made her way over and stood next to the person she was eying. “They’ve got quite the collection here!” she said, in a tone that wouldn’t scare the person. “I’ve never been here before. Have you?”
It was funny, Teddy Beauchamp never thought that he would end up at Avalon Gallery to look at ceramics and yet, here he was. Living in Hickstead for over a year, the young man always knew of its presence in the next town over. He had walked by it a few times when he decided to grace the bigger city of Willow Bridge, and he even followed them on Instangram, but it never occurred to Teddy that he should actually visit. But now he was in a sculpture class and perhaps, immaturely, had a girl that he wanted to impress, so he felt like now it was time to pay the little gallery a visit. So Teddy had called himself an uber and headed into the city now, being dropped off promptly in front of Avalon.
Heading inside, Teddy was greeted with warm lights and a variety display of ceramic pieces boasting in all different shapes, sizes, and glazes. The display was precise and yet alluding, but there was always a method to the madness when it came to gallery displays. He had learned that from one of the business classes - it required an eye and also knowing how to command a visitor's gaze. After all, while galleries were nice for foot traffic, they did actually want to sell pieces. Chocolate brown eyes looked over the various pieces now, moving his way through each carefully crafted section. He had also snagged one of Alana Teal's business cards.
He was stopped in front a bunch of pots now, feeling a little envious that he wasn't making these sorts of sculptures in his class. No, instead, he was stuck with naked models for now and he didn't know why. Seemed too advanced compared to a mug or a pot, but Teddy wasn't dumb, he knew they had their own unique techniques. Normal people couldn't just bang them out perfectly just like that. He held up the business card again, glancing it over. Should he contact Alana for some pointers? Tutoring sessions? He was three weeks into class and wasn't getting anywhere. Not that his professor expected greatness from him, they knew his concentration was in mixed media and comics, but they probably expected him to put in work.
And then there was Ida. The redhead who sat next to him. He wanted to impress her, and while she clearly didn't mind showing him the ropes, Teddy didn't want to keep on dragging her over to help when Ida needed to concentrate on her own work. Teddy bit his lip, thinking, and had been unware of an approaching figure until they spoke, “They’ve got quite the collection here!” a female voice said, “I’ve never been here before. Have you?” He looked over now to see a beanpole of a young woman, finely dress, with a sharp features and a hair cut to match. He offered her a smile, "Nah, I am sad to admit that this is my first time, but I've known about it for quite a while. It didn't occur to me to visit until I ended up in sculpture class this semester." Dang, maybe he shouldn't have outed himself as a college kid. Whatever, he was old enough, "I'm Teddy," he offered now, "Are you into the art scene?" Oddly enough, there was something about her that seemed familiar - like he should know her, not personally, but in the semi famous sense.

“Oh? Well, I hear the local art scene is quite nice. I haven’t touched ceramics in a while, either. I like it though. I wonder if they teach classes here?” Not that she would exactly get anything done if there were so many beautiful people involved. More in the sense of wanting to take pictures than flirting. Though, sometimes it led to that. Penny was quite active in that manner, but she knew how to respect boundaries. “And are you enjoying your class?”
“Teddy...I’m Penny. Oh, gosh yeah. Not in the sense of the scene here, but I do enjoy art. I do illustration, but my focus now is photography. Film...to be exact. Different and challenging, which I like. I wish I connected with things like markers and clay though. Some things kind of transfer, but rarely. What about you?” Granted, she had a feeling the illustration work would be popping up soon. It would be consistent soon, and it was like the universe was lining up for her. She had a massive new space to do art – and the silence of nature was welcomed. Since a lot of her deals would be for adventure-type books and stories.
Teddy was still finding himself bothered by this young woman's face. It was driving him absolutely nuts on where he could possibly know her from. Hopefully it would hit him soon and not in the middle of the night when he was dead asleep. The young man hated it when that happened, "I hear they do. I haven't done it myself, but a few friends have had fun. They get guest teachers every once in a while." In fact, he was pretty positive that Marina or Tegan had stopped by here before. But he was pretty certain this woman didn't care about that. Her prompt about his class startled him, feeling a little sheepishly, "Uh...no. I enjoy it for a classmate. Ceramics are not my forte at all."
He felt a little dumb admitting that to a stranger, but if there was one thing that Teddy prided himself on was being as honest and open as possible, even if it was to a mildly older stranger. And thankfully, he didn't have to classify her a stranger anymore cause she introduced herself as Penny, "Nice to meet you Penny. I deal in mixed media - acrylic paint, inks, markers, sharpies, you name it. But since I'm heavily interested in comics and design, I'm trying to move over into photoshop now. Hasn't been easy but it's all starting to click now." And speaking of clicking, her name and face was clicking together in his brain, and Teddy couldn't believe he hadn't seen it sooner.
"Wait. Penny as in Penelope Shepherd? Illustrator for 'Blue Ravenscroft and the Chalice of Destiny?'" Holy fuck, he had to make sure to not loose his cool just then. Nevermind that he was talking to one of his illustration celebrity crushes, let alone idols.

Penny lifted her eyebrows, surprised, but also not. That seemed to be a theme happening, with some of the younger people she found. “Ah, trying to get all up and personal then?” she teased. “Who knows, maybe you’ll actually learn something from it, too,” Penny added, giving a small shrug.
She eyed a plate that had some glaze, mimicking the color of a peacock. It was shiny, with a lot of variations of swirls. It would be a cute décor piece in her room, but she would think about it – after the accents. Penny gingerly placed the plate back, already planning a trip back when she had the time.
“Hey, being multi-talented is always good. Nothing like being a bit of Jack of All Trades,” she commented, hoping it came off in a bit of a supportive way. “We’re always learning in art anyway!”
Penny couldn’t help but smirk when he attached her name to her career. “Yep, that is indeed me,” she laughed. It made her desires clam up though. Granted, she should've known she would be recognized at some point. She had a decent enough name out there, so Penny had to be a bit careful.
Leave it to a stranger to read in-between the lines of his statement. Teddy could not help but to inwardly cringe a little bit, hoping that he hadn't exactly come off as a horn dog to her just then. Granted, they were all human, and they were all guilty of doing things out of their comfort zones to try and get to know a girl, or a guy for that matter, just a little bit better, "If I'm lucky, maybe it will be a bit of both." He replied with a grin now, figuring it best to just own on the woman's minor call out than to be bashful and shy away from it.
Chocolate brown eyes watched her now as she studied a ceramic blue plate. She actually picked it up to handle, and even Teddy could tell it was a decent piece of art as it reflected in the light with added movement. But that was his only take away from it - he didn't comprehend what made the glaze so nice or the techinque that went into crafting said plate. To Teddy, well, it was just a plate, but even he knew better than to write something off in the artworld, "Jack of all Trades? I like it," he replied with a grin now, "Hopefully one day the world will see it as that as well. I have to say, you sound like a wise old sage for someone who looks so young."
But as the name to the face clicked - it would make sense that one Penelope Rose Shepherd would indeed be a wise old sage. As he made the connection, chocolate brown eyes watched as a small smirk took over her face - like this was a game she knew all too well, "Ah sorry," Teddy said with a laugh now, running a hand through his hair in nervous habit, "I suppose you get that all the time. And you're probably here to enjoy yourself, not be a celebrity." Shrugging off his embarrassment now, he held out his hand for a shake, "We'll try that again. It's a pleasure to meet you, Penny. I'm Teddy. What brings you to these parts?"

“Well, it comes with the territory unfortunately,” she smiled. She had a false image way back, that because her face wasn’t so prominent in the world – Penny would remain a faceless fame. But she didn’t expect people to take photos of her and do PR on her. It was silly at the time, now she just allowed it all to happen. At least, she wasn’t an A-lister.
“Nice to meet you, Teddy! I’m here for a gallery show,” she half lied. “It’s mainly in London, but I also like to do small showings too. Figured I’d travel a bit and so far the local art scene hasn’t disappointed. You seem like a local, any details on any hot spots for artists?”
"Ah, well, the pleasure is mine," he said with his boyish smile, unable to help himself. Teddy could only imagine how stupid he must look, grinning ear to ear. But it was hard not to, not when he knew how good the illustrations were of the woman before him. Heck, Penny Shepherd must have been his age when she got her big break. As tempting as it was to ask her about it, the young man managed to withhold such questions and enthusiasms, not wanting to feel fake or coming off like he wanted to use her when that wasn't the case.
"That's pretty cool you still show in the little cities," he replied now, "I don't think many artists do that once they get big. Shame really. London and New York are cool and all, but sometimes I think the small towns have all the characters." Teddy couldn't help but to laugh when she called him a local, guess he was really starting to blend in with the crowd if that was the case, "I go to school here in town. I'm actually from across the pond as well - if the accent didn't give it away. Alana Teale who owns this galaxy is a good artist. Taylor Way is another one I can think off of the top of my head. She specializes in fiber. Can't really think of artists in the traditional sense."
His chocolate brown eyes looked through the crowds for a moment, before spotting both women. Speak of the devils, he nodded to both of them, pointing them out, "That's actually them. Alana's in the middle of the pack there, and then Taylor's by the green vase."
